Record Drillship Rate

Yesterday, Transocean Inc. received a five-year contract to lease its Deepwater Pathfinder drillship, a single-activity rig capable of drilling in water depths up to 10,000 feet, to Italy’s Eni for Gulf of Mexico operations, for a record $652,000 per day.

The contract is scheduled to begin March 2010, after the end of a three-month assignment off Ivory Coast for Moscow-based Lukoil. Estimated contract revenues over the five-year contract period are approximately $1.19 billion.

Offshore rig rates have risen as oil prices reached a record $145.85 a barrel last week, promoting further exploration for untapped reserves.

Drillers that are likely to benefit, in addition to Transocean, include Atwood Oceanics, Diamond Offshore Drilling and Pride International, according to industry reports.
