This morning I took a trip to the Wiess Energy Hall at the Houston Museum of Natural Science. The Hall, which originated in the 1960s through a gift of Harry C. Wiess, co-founder and president of Humble Oil, was renovated just three years ago and includes 12 sections that make energy understandable and exciting to both young people and adults. For someone who is just starting her career in oil and gas, I found the Hall fascinating. I learned just how intense a frac job is while riding in the Geovator -- a ride that took us 7,285 feet straight down to experience what it takes to bring oil to the surface. I observed different types of drill bits, oil in various states of viscosity and even learned how LNG is transported (and I learned that LNG does not stand for "Lindsay Nice-as-spice Goodier"). During the visit, Claire Scoogin, Director of the Wiess Energy Hall, told us that the Hall has seen an increased number of visitors this summer and has also received more media attention than usual. She believes part of the interest is a result of high gas prices, which also has many Houstonians staying close to home and choosing to visit the Museum of Natural Science. Hey, if you can't afford a trip to Disney World, a trip to the museum, the zoo and Hermann Park are the next best thing!
