Steve Toon is editor of A&D Watch newsletter and the online A&D Center as well as a staff editor for Oil and Gas Investor magazine. He joined Hart Energy Publishing and the Oil and Gas Investor group in 2007. He has a Bachelor’s degree in journalism from Baylor University and more than 20 years of publishing and business experience, beginning as a reporter and night news editor with the Baylor student newspaper, The Lariat, and an internship with Houston City Magazine in the 1983.
He began his career in trade publishing, reporting for Occupational Health and Safety News Digest and Environmental Management News newsletters, and was editor of the trade journals Dental Student and Continuing Care magazines in the health and medical sectors. Steve covered police and general assignments for the Killeen (Texas) Daily Herald, and has been a book editor and health education writer. He was editor of Houston’s and Dallas’ Health & Fitness Sports Magazine for five years.
Prior to joining Hart, Steve was pursuing his own interests in real estate A&D, buying and selling investment properties, and is well-versed in deal-making. He was an officer on the board of directors of The Realty Investment Club of Houston for five years, the nation’s second largest real estate investor trade association, as secretary, and as newsletter director of The Enricher, which won an award from the national association for best newsletter in 2005.
Steve has traveled extensively throughout Europe, China and South America living out of a backpack for extended periods. Notable adventures include sleeping on beaches in Greece, trekking by foot through Patagonia, peering into an active volcano crater in Italy, sleeping at the base of Angel Falls (the world’s highest waterfall), bicycling through rural China, hitching on a riverboat up the Amazon, hiking the Inca Trail to the lost city of Machu Piccu, and swimming with piranhas. He has self-published the travelogue “The Adventure Traveller” and is awaiting an offer for a sizeable advance for the “South American Chronicles” manuscript.
When not on deadline, Steve enjoys researching family history, photography, camping and mostly spending quality time with family. He is married to the amazingly patient and resilient Cheryl and has three kids: one son, 6, and identical twin girls, 3. He doesn’t always know for sure which girl is which.
